Abstract
 We report preliminary results of a mixed-methods longitudinal study academic writing by graduate students in English Vietnam. The research involves Vietnamese EFL teachers (n=62) taking 2-year MA Linguistics (TESOL) program delivered hybrid mode. program, jointly taught an American private university and large public Vietnam, uses innovative scaffolded thesis model developed the researchers. In entry surveys, vocabulary was mentioned most often as significant challenge for writing. compared that our used early late drafts their theses against two reference corpora: level linguistics subcorpus BAWE corpus student COCAA 2010-12. Data from first introduction, discussion conclusion sections shows compare favorably with both native non-native terms lexical density measured type to token ratio, but use discipline-specific “core academic” words is more limited scope. Between drafts, overall length expanded approximately 17% collectively added 302 word types including 25 core 11 discipline specific. It clear cannot be disentangled completely other aspects such bundles, syntax, cohesion. Our will enhance pedagogy EAP suggestions developing targeted contextualized instruction using vocabulary, it particular interest instructors advanced environment.
